Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the typical process of starting therapy?

I like to recommend that new clients start with a free 15-minute phone consultation. This offers both the therapist and the client an opportunity to briefly speak to each other and ask any crucial questions before scheduling their first full session. These phone consultations are especially helpful to individuals that are shopping around for the therapist that is the best fit for them. After this phone consultation, the next step would be scheduling your initial session - this is a 75-minute appointment where the real therapy work begins.

2. What can I expect in my initial session?

In your initial session, we will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, explore your goals, and begin building a foundation for our work together. It's also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a sense of the therapeutic process.

3. How long are therapy sessions, and how often should I attend?

The initial session is 75 minutes long, to give us plenty of time to discuss your counseling goals and establish a rapport. Return sessions typically last 50 minutes. However, I also offer 90-minute sessions for those who feel like they need more time. The frequency of sessions depends on your needs - initially, weekly sessions are common, but we can adjust based on your progress and preferences.

4. Is everything discussed in therapy confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a top priority. I believe the promise of a safe and secure space is a crucial aspect of the therapeutic exchange. Exceptions exist only in specific cases, such as where there is a risk of harm to yourself or others. We'll discuss the limits of confidentiality during our initial session.

5. What modalities (i.e., in-person or virtual) do you offer sessions in?

I offer both virtual and in-person sessions to help make therapy more accessible to all. Whether in-person or online, the goal remains to provide a safe and effective therapeutic space. Virtual sessions are conducted via secure video call, and in-person sessions are offered at my office space at 723 W. 17th Street, Houston, TX 77008.

6. How do I schedule an appointment?

You can easily schedule an appointment by clicking the “Book Now” button in the top corner of your screen. You can also reach out directly via phone (281-984-9054) or email (info@sagecounselingtx.com) to schedule a session. I aim to accommodate your availability and schedule sessions that suit your needs.

7. How do you handle payment and insurance?

All major credit cards accepted for payment. I do not accept cash or check, and an up-to-date credit card must be kept on file at all times. Before your first full session, you will be sent a Credit Card Authorization Form to provide your payment details, and your card will be automatically charged following each session. I don't currently accept insurance, but can provide a superbill to be submitted to your provider for reimbursement (if applicable).

8. What is your rescheduling and cancellation policy?

Life can be unpredictable, so I aim to remain as flexible as possible to accommodate for schedule changes. Rescheduling requests are allowed at no cost, given they are submitted at least 24 hours in advance of your session. If you do not show up for your scheduled appointment, and you have not notified me at least 24 hours in advance, you will be required to pay the full cost of the session.

9. What approaches do you use in therapy?

In case you'd like to do your own research on my theoretical orientation, I practice from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Person-Centered approach. However, I also utilize a blend of evidence-based approaches tailored to your unique needs, and often incorporate techniques from mindfulness-based therapy, emotion-focused therapy, existentialism, and solution-focused therapy. This may seem like a lot of counseling jargon, so I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about my approach.

10. What if I'm unsure about starting therapy?

It's normal to feel uncertain. The courage and vulnerability that therapy requires can be an intimidating and foreign experience, as much as it is healing and meaningful. I'm here to answer any questions or concerns you may have. I’d love to discuss your expectations and determine if therapy is the right fit for you.
